The hypnotism services I render to the public are defined as the use of hypnosis to inculcate positive thinking and the capacity for self-hypnosis. I do not represent my services as any form of medical, behavioral or mental health care, and despite research to the contrary, by law, I may make no health benefit claims for my services.  North Shore Hypnosis utilizes hypnotism to help clients where I coach or guide to motivate individuals to achieve their goals. Hypnotism for medical or psychological problems requires a written referral from a licensed practitioner of those healing arts." - Carol Denicker, BCH, CMI

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a natural, psychological state experienced as trance. Hypnosis can be induced in an individual or to an entire group. In general, hypnotism is a highly effective technique in solving problems or creating rapid change.

Among other things, hypnosis is a valuable tool in stress reduction. It can help develop emotional strength and can be a powerful aid in behavior modification. In hypnosis, suggestions are given which are designed to automatically lead you to positive, worthwhile outcomes mutually agreed upon prior to induction.

The truth is you have been in a hypnotic state many thousands of times while driving, reading, watching television, listening to music and daydreaming. You didn't notice it because hypnosis is a natural state of mind for all human beings. Your hypnotist will induce this state and maximize its effectiveness.

In essence, hypnosis is a means of communication between the conscious mind and the subconscious mind. It is a natural state of mind experienced as trance. Hypnosis can be induced through the interaction of one individual speaking to another, or to an entire group as (group hypnosis); we can also learn to self-induce trance as in (self-hypnosis). Hypnosis, with it's myriad of applications, is a highly effective science in solving problems. It's a valuable adjunct to standard medical care and psychotherapy; and probably the lowest risk procedure available from the standpoint of contraindications.

Hypnosis can bring about a major change in motivation, self-confidence, relaxation, physical discomfort, creativity, habit control, and many other problems or difficulty in achieving goals. Yet few procedures are less understood, or more plagued by misunderstandings. Hypnosis is neither strange or mysterious. The truth is, you drift in and out of the hypnotic or trance state, on a daily basis. It goes unnoticed because it seems so natural and normal. And that, is exactly what hypnosis is, one of the natural states of mind that all human beings experience.

What is Trance?
A trance is a natural state occurring whenever your attention is narrowly focused and relatively free of distractions. Your attention may be focused either internally (on self-talk, daydreaming, meditation, etc.) or externally (on a task, reading, a movie, engaged in an art form, intently listening to a speaker, etc.). Attention is narrowly focused so that other environmental stimuli are ignored for a period of time.

How will I feel when I'm hypnotized?
Hypnosis is very relaxing. You certainly will not be asleep or unconscious during hypnosis, you will be relaxed, but mentally aware.

Can I get stuck in hypnosis?
Just as you willingly decide to go into hypnosis, by the same token, you will decide to come out of it.

Can everyone be hypnotized?
Everyone can be hypnotized provided that they want to be.   Hypnosis is not something one person "does" to another. We are all born with the ability to enter and utilize trance. Your development of this skill can be enhanced with the guidance of an experienced hypnotist.

Will I remember anything after the session is over?
You will remember everything your own subconscious mind deems safe and beneficial. Your session will be recorded so that you can review it.

Is it possible to make me do negative things?

People can be manipulated into doing negative things with or without hypnosis. You wouldn't do anything in a hypnotic state that you wouldn't do in your waking state.

How is hypnosis different from sleep, meditation or guided imagery?

They are all "trance states". Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness, a changed or focused state of awareness, concentration and perception. What separates hypnosis from meditation and guided imagery is the reinforcement of goals, the fact that relaxation is not a prerequisite as well as the use of the post-hypnotic suggestion.

Is hypnosis safe?
Yes, hypnosis is safe when an ethical, competent and qualified certified consulting hypnotist practices it.
