According to The Concise Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia, Third Edition Copyright © 1994, Columbia University Press Encyclopedia.com - Hypnosis is:
An altered state of consciousness characterized by focused concentration similar to that experienced when daydreaming or concentrating and oblivious to distraction. It allows access to the highly suggestible subconscious mind by quieting the conscious mind. Research has shown electrical changes in the brain during hypnosis; the brain waves of a hypnotized person are usually different from those of a person in the normal waking state. Most people can be hypnotized, although the ability varies from person to person. Techniques vary but usually involve deep relaxation accompanied by the focusing of the mind (as on an object or the voice of the hypnotist). Hypnosis is occasionally used as an aid in medical practice, especially for anesthesia and pain relief; in psychotherapy, e.g., to help patients recall traumatic events and overcome denial; and to assist people in breaking unwanted habits (e.g., smoking, overeating).

of consciousness servers no other purpose, except that it is a relaxed
and comfortable state to be in. However, the name is a misnomer,
because this is not a true state of hypnosis, because the essential feature
of any level of hypnosis is that it would be a heightened state of suggestibility.
Once one is in this state they are no longer responsive, nor are they suggestible,
hence this is not a true state of hypnosis, although it is widely regarded
to be so. This is also called the Esdaile State.
